Thames Tideway Tunnel wins top planning award

The £4.2 billion Thames Tideway Tunnel is this year’s winner of the RTPI’s Silver Jubilee Cup, the UK and Ireland’s most prestigious planning award.

The annual RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence took place last night in London. Commenting on the win,  Janet Askew, President of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) said:

“The Thames Tideway Tunnel is an outstanding example of world-class infrastructure being brilliantly delivered with a huge contribution from the planners involved. This worthy winner of our award also impressed with a very positive approach to public engagement, and will result in the vital upgrading of London’s sewers that will have an impact that will last for many years to come.”

Nick Raynsford, a former planning minister, and Chair of Judges this year said:

“The Thames Tideway Tunnel is an exceptional solution to an extremely complicated planning problem. It is an outstanding winner of the Silver Jubilee Cup in what was a very strong field. The very high quality of finalists this year made selecting the winners in each of the categories challenging.”

As the overall winner of the RTPI’s Awards for Planning Excellence, the Thames Tideway Tunnel also won in the Planning to Create Economically Successful Places category.

The RTPI represents 23,000 planning professionals worldwide and promotes spatial planning, shapes policy and raises professional standards. The Awards for Planning Excellence have been run by the RTPI for over 30 years to recognise planning excellence.

This year’s headline sponsor was AECOM with other sponsors and supporters including Quod, Bilfinger GVA, kdh associates, The Planner, Thames Tideway Tunnel, Planning Aid England and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
