Wessex Water win two awards for trenchless technology work

Staff from Wessex Water’s engineering and construction department have been awarded two United Kingdom Society for Trenchless Technology awards for two separate initiatives.

Project engineer Ashley Williamson won the Young Engineer of the Year Award for Wessex Water for the second year in a row, after technician Liam MacFarlane won it last year. He is the fifth WECS engineer to have won the award overall.

He received recognition for his efforts after he submitted a paper on a sewer collapse beneath a property in Salisbury that he worked on.Using trenchless (no-dig) techniques to repair sewers significantly saves time and minimises disruption to customers.

The water company’s repair and maintenance (R&M) waste team also picked up the Renovation - Small Projects up to £250k award for a paper submitted by contracts manager Dan Humphrey. The paper discussed how R&M now use trenchless techniques for everyday sewer repairs and not just larger schemes, which generates around £1.5 million in savings every year.

In the near future, R&M are hoping to do more trenchless repairs in-house as it undertakes its own small length sewer linings. This will further increase the money saved by Wessex Water each year.
