£2m upgrade for Northumbrian Water WwWT works

Northumbrian Water’s Crookhall wastewater treatment works at Consett in County Durham is set to benefit from a £2 million pound upgrade.

Refurbishment of the treatment plant  will start on 18th May  and is expected to be complete by 18 January  2016.

As well as increasing treatment capacity, various treatment processes at the site will be improved to make sure the water company continues to discharge high quality treated wastewater to the Stockerley Burn.

The site, which currently serves around 2,000 properties in Leadgate and Crookhall, treats more than 2.5 million litres of wastewater per day.

Nigel Watts, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said:

"Crookhall sewage treatment works has been treating wastewater for more than 50 years. We’re going to install new equipment and build an extra filter to ensure the site is fit for future generations. “

Northumbrian Water’s construction contractor Amey will be carrying out the work. The water company is investing some £180 million between 2015 and 2020, to upgrade and maintain its 412 sewage treatment works.
