WRSE launches consultation on Resilience Framework for regional water resources plan

Water Resources South East (WRSE), the alliance of the six water companies that cover the South East region of England, has today published the Resilience Framework it proposes to use in the development of its regional plan.

WRSE RESILIENCE FRAMEWORK CONSULTATION

WRSE is developing a multi-sector, regional resilience plan for the South East - the plan will be used as a blueprint for water supply investment by each water company in the region.

The plan will take a long-term view, looking ahead to 2100, and consider the water needed for use in the region, including:

  • at home and at work
  • by agriculture
  • electricity generation
  • industry
  • recreation
  • the environment

WRSE said the plan will move the region from a focus on securing public water services and managing the risk of droughts, to securing wider resilience across a series of connected water systems.

The plan will seek to:

  • Ensure there is enough water to serve the growing population and support growth in the economy
  • Address the impacts of climate change on demand for water and how much is available
  • Improve the environment by leaving more water in the region’s rivers, streams and underground sources
  • Increase the region’s resilience to severe drought and other extreme events.

WRSE intends to publish its draft regional plan for consultation in early 2022.

To ensure the plan is resilient to future shocks and stresses the Alliance is planning to develop and test it by using a new resilience framework.

The consultation paper sets out what the resilience framework is, why it was chosen and how it will be applied.

Deadline to submit responses to the resilience framework consultation is July 3, 2020 - click here to access the online consultation.
