Flooding and Flood Defence

Floods Minister Rory Stewart and 240 Environment Agency staff took part in an exercise last week by constructing temporary barriers, testing pumps and manning incident rooms in a scenario based on the severe flooding of winter 2013/14, the wettest winter in 250 years.

The Environment Agency started ground investigation work this week to determine the design and route of the £120 million Oxford Flood Alleviation Scheme’s proposed flood relief channel.

Scottish Water is about to start a major environmental improvement project which will tackle sewer flooding in part of the Springburn area of Glasgow.

Mott MacDonald has begun design work on the £19 million Sheffield Lower Don Valley flood defence project, one of the largest flood protection schemes in the UK.

The Environment Agency and Slough Borough Council are seeking comment from interested stakeholders on potential options for a proposed £ 3 million flood alleviation scheme in Slough.

£26 million Morpeth flood scheme opens

Morpeth flood scheme 1The Morpeth flood scheme which opens this week will protect residents by storing millions of gallons of flood water upstream - one of the largest projects of its kind built by the Environment Agency.

A new £6 million tidal gauge for the Environment Agency will record data to improve flood forecasting,  completing a national network of 44 gauges that record information about sea levels to provide more accurate forecasts.

Severn Trent Water has joined forces with the Environment Agency and Derbyshire County Council to create a working group to tackle flooding issues in Melbourne, Derbyshire.

The Southend Flood Partnership has prepared to respond to torrential rainfall after severe weather warnings were issued for Thursday night and Friday morning by the Met Office.

The VBA jv of VolkerStevin, Boskalis Westminster and Atkins will shortly start work on behalf of the Environment Agency on two major new flood defence schemes - a £6.5 million scheme in Louth and the £8.1 million Horncastle scheme. Planning permission was granted in April and June respectively.
