Flooding and Flood Defence

Environment Agency Directors have formally approved the Lower Tidal River Arun strategy which sets out recommendations for managing flood risk in the Arun Valley, from Pallingham Weir to Littlehampton and Ford.

A major new report published by Natural Resources Wales is making 47 recommendations to improve Wales’ resilience to coastal flooding in the future.

JBA and Lancaster University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics have joined forces to create a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to develop enhanced flood modelling techniques.

Construction work has started on a major new £50 million flood defence scheme in Leeds, which will protect hundreds of homes and businesses.

Leading global insurance group Munich Re says that flood events in 2013 have highlighted the positive effect of defence measures.

The Welsh Assembly has announced it will provide over £3.7 million to help protect homes and businesses in Ceredigion that are at risk of flooding and coastal erosion.

The Environment Agency has said that flood protection has been restored to 115,000 homes with 350 damaged flood risk management assets already repaired following winter flood and storm damage.

Balfour Beatty has started work on one of the largest coastal defence schemes in the UK which will protect over 12,000 homes and businesses from the risk of coastal flooding.

The London Assembly Environment Committee has published a summary of the flood risks facing the capital.

The Environment Agency has begun dredging of one of the major rivers in the Somerset Moors and Levels.
