New flood warning system launched in Hull

The Environment Agency has developed the new system to provide quicker and more specific warnings to the public when they are at risk from river or coastal flooding.

The automated service will alert people by phone, email, text message, or fax, depending on the chosen preferences of individuals who sign up.

Hull’s improved warning system will primarily be used to alert people to flood risks posed by rivers and the sea. Warnings will be issued via three separate warning areas, Hull east, Hull west, and Hull city centre, covering a total of 100,000 properties. The system does not provide warnings for sewer and surface water flooding.

Flood warnings have previously been available for people in Hull, but the new system uses new flood modelling data to identify more specific risks, and improved technology is being used to reach more people in a shorter time period.

Kim Tan, Flood Resilience Advisor at the Environment Agency, said:

"The launch of this new flood warning service is great news for the people of Hull. When properties are at risk of flooding, it is vital that people are alerted to give them time to prepare themselves, their families, businesses and properties against the risk of flooding. I urge everyone to make the most of this important service and sign up for free flood warnings. Being prepared really can make a huge difference when flooding hits."
