Environment Agency Directors have formally approved the Lower Tidal River Arun strategy which sets out recommendations for managing flood risk in the Arun Valley, from Pallingham Weir to Littlehampton and Ford.
The approval follows scrutiny of their work by national experts from a range of disciplines. In the past 12 months the Environment Agency has completed a formal public consultation on the draft recommended options.
The next stage is to work out how the recommendations can be put in place which is dependent on funding availability. According to the Environment Agency, central government funding is limited and it is likely that “substantial contributions from other sources” will be needed.
The Environment Agency, together with West Sussex County Council, Arun District Council and Arundel Town Council will now continue to work with local people to explore alternative funding sources. The work will only be carried out when money is available.
In the event that funding cannot be found, the Agency said it would then work with communities to plan how to adapt to the changes to the environment that will inevitably occur.
Local communities have worked closely with the Environment Agency in developing the strategy - the recommended options were developed with the help of feedback from communities in the Arun valley.
