Natural Resources Wales has completed two flood schemes at a combined cost of £4.2 million.
In Ystradgynlais a £2.6m flood scheme to reduce flood risk to 228 homes and 12 businesses was officially opened last week by Natural Resources Wales.
Contractors Birse Civils and Arup carried out the work on the Welsh Government-funded scheme, which began in October 2012 and was completed this summer.
The project involved building a new flood wall along the river bank to contain floodwater in the River Tawe during periods of heavy rain, while parts of the existing highway wall were also replaced and strengthened to provide a better level of flood protection.
The area is at a high risk of flooding, and as the River Tawe responds very quickly to rainfall, Natural Resoures Wales is often only able to provide a very short warning period.
In Llanelli, Natural Resources Wales has also completed a £1.6m flood project to help protect almost 160 properties in Llanelli from flooding. The scheme in Pwll, Llanelli has involved the construction of a 90 metre-long flood wall.
The scheme will help to reduce the risk of flooding to properties in the Pwll area that have previously been affected by flooding from the River Dulais, most recently in July 2009.
Work on the scheme, which has been funded by the Welsh Government, began in February last year.
