Environment Agency plans dam for Ecclestone to reduce flood risk

The Environment Agency is planning to construct a dam at Eccleston in Lancashire to reduce flood risk.

The Agency has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for a licence to impound the River Yarrow at Eccleston in Lancashire. The Agency is proposing the licensing of a new 535 metre long and 4.5 metre high earthwork dam including a twin gated culvert spanning the River Yarrow.

The dam will not hold back water during low flows but during high flows the structure is designed to restrict downstream flow to reduce the risk of flooding.

The dam will hold back a maximum volume of 1.3 million cubic metres of water.

The application and supporting documents can be viewed during normal office hours, at the Environment Agency Lutra House office in Preston.

Deadline to submit comments on the application is  8 June 2016 – after that date the Environment Agency will be able to grant a licence authorising the proposal.
