The Government has set out details of more than 1,400 flood defence schemes to protect 300,000 homes as part of the updated National Infrastructure Plan published this morning.
The Treasury has outlined details of the projects where £2.3 billion already earmarked for capital spending on flood defences over the next six years will be spent ahead of tomorrow’s Autumn statement.
Key projects include:
- Boston barrier in Lincolnshire - £73m
- Humber Estuary - £80m
- Oxford western conveyance scheme - £42m
- Rossall coastal defence improvements in Lancashire - £47m
- Thames Estuary flood alleviation scheme - £196m
- Tonbridge area local defences - 17m
The Government has also committed to spend an additional £15.5m on flood defences in Somerset over the next six years as part of at least £35m committed to Somerset from this year until 2021.
Commenting on the plans, Chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander, said:
“We all saw the destruction and heartache caused by flooding last year and that is why this investment is vital to build up Britain’s defences for the future.”
“The projects we are announcing today will protect some of the country’s most at risk locations ensuring that we will be as prepared as possible for future severe weather.”
According to the Government, the record programme of investment will reduce risk to at least 300,000 households and avoid an estimated £30 billion of economic damages. The Goverrnment said that for the first time ever, it has also been able to calculate the impact on the overall national flood risk from the investment, saying that the investment programme will drive down overall flood risk by 5% by 2021.
The plan published by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs setting out details of the flood defence schemes said that spending on flood and coastal erosion risk management had increased in both cash and real terms spending during the course of this Parliament, with over £3.2 billion invested by the end of 2014-15.
