Power firm seeks licence for River Thames hydropower scheme

South East Power Engineering Limited have made an application to the Environment Agency to impound water on the River Thames for a hydropower generation scheme.

The application is for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Thames at Bell Weir, Runnymede, Egham, Surrey.

The existing weir structure will be altered to install three Archimedean screw turbines and a fish and eel pass. The alteration works are to enable the abstraction of water for the purpose of hydro-electric power generation at a maximum rate of 24,000 litres per second and for fish and eel passage. All of the water used will be returned to the River Thames immediately downstream of the weir.

The application and documents submitted can only be viewed by visiting the Environment Agency during normal office hours at Red Kite House, Howbery Park, Benson Lane Wallingford in Oxfordshire. None of the documents have been made available online.
