Morgan Sindall Grontmij JV wins £14.6m Yorkshire Water contract

The Morgan Sindall Grontmij joint venture has been awarded a circa £14.6 million project with Yorkshire Water to upgrade Castleford Waste Water Treatment Works and improve the water quality of the River Aire.

The project, known as the Castleford Freshwater Fish Directive Scheme, includes the design and construction of a new inlet works, three primary settlement tanks, an activated sludge plant, three final settlement tanks, two inlet pumping stations and a storm tank, as well as associated sludge treatment facilities to reduce the amount of ammonia released into the river.

In addition, the team will decommission the redundant assets once the upgrade work is complete.

Jag Paddam, managing director of Infrastructure at Morgan Sindall, says:

“Prior to the award of this delivery contract, Morgan Sindall Grontmij worked closely with Yorkshire Water Services on the feasibility stage of this scheme to consider the various options and identify the best possible solution.

“We look forward to continuing this collaborative approach to ensure that the targets of the Freshwater Fish Directive are met and the quality of fresh water is upgraded to ensure that it can support fish life.”

John Chubb, managing director for Grontmij, says:

“The collaborative approach of Morgan Sindall Grontmij, Yorkshire Water Services and our supply chain has added real value to this scheme. This is an excellent example of design leading to sustainability”.

The Castleford scheme, which is due to start on site in April 2013 and will be completed in May 2015, has been awarded under the AMP5 Yorkshire Water Framework, to which Morgan Sindall and Grontmij were appointed in August 2010. Projects under the frameworks range in value from £5 million to £50 million and include clean water and waste water projects from feasibility through design and construction to commissioning and handover.

Other recently awarded Morgan Sindall Grontmij projects include the circa £22 million Bridlington Bathing Water contract and a circa £26 million Scarborough Bathing Water contract, both of which are progressing well.
