Leading wastewater services and treatment specialist Alpheus has begun delivery of its £200 million contract to operate, maintain and enhance the Mining Remediation Authority’s (MRA’s) water network.
Alpheus, part of the Anglian Water Group through Anglian Venture Holdings (AVH), is now providing ongoing 24-hour operational delivery across the Mining Remediation Authority’s mine water treatment schemes, subsidence pumping stations and data monitoring points.
The initial eight-year, £200 million contract awarded to Alpheus will see it provide operational delivery for the Mining Remediation Authority’s 82 mine water treatment schemes and 10 subsidence pumping stations, and collect and manage data from over 700 monitoring points.
As part of the contract, Alpheus has welcomed over 35 transferring colleagues into the business, bringing valuable local knowledge and operational expertise that will support the continued delivery of high-quality services across England, Scotland and Wales.

The Mining Remediation Authority is a government body, sponsored by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, that manages the legacy of past coal and metal mining to protect people, property and the environment.
Carl Banton, Chief Operations Director at the Mining Remediation Authority, said:
“During 2025 to 2026, we maintained and operated 82 mine water treatment schemes with the capacity to treat up to 232 billion litres of mine water, preventing pollution of drinking water, rivers and the sea. Our mine water treatment schemes contribute to the protection of water resources and prevent 3,712 tonnes of iron a year from entering Great Britain’s waterways.
“The capabilities of Alpheus, along with its commitment to social value initiatives, make it an ideal partner to help us make a better future for people and the environment in mining areas.”
The partnership was initially announced on 1st January 2026, and came into effect on 1st July 2026 after a six month collective mobilisation period.
