The water company has issued a Periodic indicative notice explaing that it is seeking alternative routes in the recycling/ disposal of its screenings and would like to speak with suppliers who could have a potential solution for this waste.

Screenings are the items removed from the incoming flow to sewage treatment works or pumping stations.

United Utilities produces circa 13,000 tonnes of screenings from its wastewater treatment works that requires disposal.

Screenings are the bulky solids mechanically removed from wastewater (sewage) flows during the preliminary stage of treatment. They are made up primarily of sanitary products and their packaging, applicators, wet wipes and cotton buds and also includes some plastics, paper and wood and a small organic fraction which comes from leaves branches etc that enter into sewer systems.

Screenings are removed via two stages of preliminary treatment where most sites screen down to 6mm in two directions, (there are some sites now screening flows down to 3mm) and before sludge treatment. United Utilities differentiates by describing these as sludge screenings, they are under the same EWC.

The company is seeking alternativee routes in the recycling/ disposal of its screenings and would like to speak with suppliers who could have a potential solution for this waste. The utility has carried out various trials and routes for disposal / recycling of screenings in the past.
