Anglian Water is seeking supply chain input disposal routes for screenings waste – the water company has published a Periodic Indicative Notice inviting interested suppliers to get in touch.

At approximately 7000-8000 tonnes annually across the Anglian Water region, screening waste is Anglian Water's largest waste stream by tonnage .
The water company said all of the waste is sent to landfill as it is currently the only viable outlet - this equates to 88% of the wastes Anglian Water send to landfill (2021/22 data).
The screenings waste predominantly consists of of wet wipes, sanitary products and other wastes that are screened out before the Water Recycling Centre treatment processes.
There is a desire to move away from landfill and and promote circularity by viewing the wastes as a resource or product.
The largest water and water recycling company in England and Wales by geographic area, Anglian Water supplies water and water recycling services to almost seven million people in the East of England.
Anglian Water has 1,077 Water Recycling Centres that all carry out screening activities on incoming sewage, prior to the site's operations - this is required to collect, transport, treat and sustainably recycle all associated sludge that arise from the processing of sewage. Currently screenings are produced on every Water Recycling Centre.
The water company is looking to move away from landfill with its negative environmental impacts to a more environmentally sensitive waste disposal route to increase company reputation and promote its circularity by viewing the wastes as a resource or product.
In addition, the number of landfills in the UK is decreasing as they close to screenings waste – landfill availability is predicted to drop by 50% in the next 5 years.
Some operators have already stopped accepting the 'water discount,' which Anglian Water currently receives for the water content of the waste - currently a 52% discount on landfill tax. Both factors are likely to increase the gate fees the company pays to deposit the wastes - losing the water discount loss could result in a significant increase to the cost of disposal.
Anglian is now seeking information on the available technologies available on the market for screenings recycling and said it is open to the idea the final product is returned to the company for onward use. Any proposals involving recycling products to agricultural land would need to fully comply with all appropriate legislation & codes of practice, including the Safe Sludge Matrix and BAS (Biosolids Assurance Scheme) Standard where applicable.
The utility is also open to the idea of working collaboratively with other water companies to increase the tonnes of screenings processed.
Anglian Water is now inviting suppliers with experience in this area to get in touch with details of their company's core skills and services offered, together with examples of projects and services.
Time limit for receipt of expressions of interest 30 June 2023 – Anglian Water will then follow up with an initial "teams" meeting.
