Net Zero - Severn Trent looks for supply chain input on monitoring and quantifying GHG emissions

Severn Trent Water is looking for supply chain input on commercially available products and services for monitoring and quantifying GHG emissions.

 BIOMETHANE PLANT SEVERN TRENT

The water company has committed to a Triple Pledge of net carbon zero, 100% renewable electricity and 100% electric fleet by 2030. In addition, the utility has also signed up to science-based targets.

As part of the net carbon zero and science based target pledges, Severn Trent is now inviting companies to come forward with new ideas that will help locate, monitor and quantify both continuous and fugitive greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; specifically methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from wastewater treatment and biogas production facilities. Nitrous oxide can be a biproduct of these biological processes - fugitive methane emissions resulting from leaks across this process have been identified as a key contributor to overall site GHG emissions.

Severn Trent is seeking to install continuous monitoring at eight wastewater treatment works to monitor and quantify nitrous oxide monitoring.

The organic material removed from the wastewater treatment process is used to generate biogas on circa 20 sites.

In addition, there are also open processes and storage which are expected to continuously emit methane. The company's asset base includes c1000 wastewater treatment works which utilise biological processes to break down ammonia - including activated sludge plants (ASP), rotating biological contactors (RBC), and trickling filters/ biofilters.

Severn Trent is also looking to install continuous methane monitoring at three biogas production sites in order to quantify total emissions as well as locate leaks.

The purpose of the soft market testing is to understand commercially available products and services for monitoring and quantifying GHG emissions. Severn Trent is now inviting interested suppliers to submit Expressions of Interest in response to the PIN, bearing in mind that:

  • Solutions should be deliverable now with no further development required
  • The company wants to look at solutions for the full suite of its asset base - from large urban sites to small rural applications

Estimated date of publication of the formal contract notice is 30 September 2021.

Time limit for receipt of Expressions of Interest is 6 September 2021- click here to access the Periodic Indicative Notice documentation.
