Second major Canadian contract for Scottish Water International

Scottish Water International has started a second major assignment in the Western Canadian City of Calgary.

A five-strong team of project consultants from the Dunfermline-based public utility are undertaking a service review for The City of Calgary’s Water Resources business unit.

Drawing on Scottish Water’s expertise in asset management and capital delivery, the review will see the team recommend improvements in efficiency and effectiveness.

It follows a similar 12-month review of the Calgary water business’s operations and maintenance functions, in which the Scottish Water team identified annual efficiency benefits of up to $5M, along with customer service improvements.

The latest project is now underway and is expected to run until July. Rob Spackman, Director, Water Resources with The City of Calgary said:

“We are very pleased to welcome Scottish Water back to Calgary to work with our water, wastewater and stormwater utility for a second consulting engagement. Scottish Water brings both great capability and expertise which will assist The City to continually improve our business and demonstrate value to our citizens.”

Scottish Water International, which achieved exports of more than £2 million in the most recent financial year, was established in 2012 to develop business opportunities abroad using the skills and expertise which exists in Scottish Water.

Nigel Ayton, Managing Director of Scottish Water International, said:

“This new assignment in Calgary is welcome recognition of Scottish Water’s experience of transforming the delivery of water services in Scotland. It demonstrates the continued demand for Scottish Water to export its expertise through services which help international clients raise standards and reduce costs.

“It has been a successful year for us having also won a contract to provide advice and support to Adelaide-based SA Water. This has seen us share knowledge and make recommendations based on our experience of delivering an annual investment programme in Scotland worth around £500 million - experience which will also be relevant in Calgary.

“Elsewhere, we have been continuing our work in Doha as part of a five-year drainage improvement programme, which will enhance the management of drainage systems in Qatar.

“Our previous work in Calgary - the first major assignment that Scottish Water International had won on its own - resulted in a very satisfied client, and we look forward to building this in the months ahead while pursuing potential new opportunities.”
