IWO renames as part of modernisation programme

IWO (Institution of Water Officers), the only professional body that is dedicated to supporting the careers of people working in the UK water industry, is being renamed the Institute of Water.

Further to last week’s £17.9m fine (the largest of any imposed on the 103 companies) imposed on Kier by the OFT arising from its investigation into cover-pricing in the construction industry, in a detailed statement Kier said it was further considering its position.

Balfour Beatty acquires Parsons Brinckerhoff

Balfour Beatty, the international engineering and construction professional services and investment group, has confirmed that it is to acquire Parsons Brinckerhoff inc., one of the world’s leading professional services companies, for US $626 million - around £380 million.

Kier Group has announced its preliminary results for the year to 30 June 2009. The Group reported “good results against the backdrop of a very challenging economic climate”.

Engineers keep flooding scheme afloat

A £4.5m scheme that involved engineers battling with the second strongest tidal range in the world has been completed reducing the risk of flooding in Bristol city centre.

Interserve, the services, maintenance and building group, has secured a place on Severn Trent’s £40 million property framework, alongside two other contractors.

Northern Ireland Water (NI Water) is investing £1.8m in north Armagh by providing a new Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) with increased treatment capability.

Joint venture partners Morgan Est and VINCI Construction Grands Projets - two of the industry’s leading civil engineering contractors - are celebrating after hearing they are to be presented with a Green Apple Environment Award.

The future of the Earth could rest on potentially dangerous and unproven geoengineering technologies unless emissions of carbon dioxide can be greatly reduced, the latest Royal Society report has found.

With some economists heralding the start of the upturn for the local economy, Northern Ireland Water (NI Water) has announced the opening of its new £2m Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) in Park, Derry.
