Southern Water Cleaner Seas scheme wins prestigious award

Southern Water’s £300 million Cleaner Seas for Sussex scheme has triumphed at this year’s Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Awards South East.

The scheme, which included construction of 11km of new sewer tunnel, two pumping stations and a wastewater treatment works at Peacehaven in Sussex, was voted Project of the Year and won the Infrastructure Project category.

The Project of the Year award is presented to the scheme which has been judged overall as an outstanding example of best practice by professionals working in both the built and natural environments.

In their comments, the judges said they were impressed with “the scale, complexity and ingenuity” of the scheme and its “impressive list of innovations and achievements”.

Richard Hodgson, Southern Water’s Head of Planning and Performance, said:

“This is another fantastic result for the project team at Southern Water. It is great to be recognised for all the hard work that has gone in to delivering this magnificent feat of engineering.”

The Cleaner Seas for Sussex scheme took 12 years to plan and four years to build. It ensures the 95 million litres of wastewater produced each day by people in Peacehaven, Telscombe Cliffs, Saltdean, Rottingdean, Ovingdean and Brighton and Hove is treated to EU standards.

The awards are the latest to be scooped by the scheme, including being named Major Civil Engineering Project of the Year at last year’s British Construction Industry Awards where it beat other entries including The London 2012 Olympic Park Project.
