Severn Trent to launch £4 upgrade scheme to replace lead water pipes across Eccleshall

Severn Trent is launching an upgrade across Eccleshall aimed at replacing all lead water supply pipes in the area and provide the best quality drinking water.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve water quality and environmental sustainability from the local water supply.

It will see around £4 million invested into the upgrades, which are expected to run over the next couple of years, will involve surveying and sampling at all qualifying properties.

Customers can expect visits from either people working on behalf of Severn Trent - advance notice will be provided through a series of batched communications to ensure residents are informed ahead of any work in their area.

Katie Machale, Severn Trent Transformation Project and Change Manager for the project, said:

“Upgrading the pipes in Eccleshall will not only improve the quality and reliability of our customers’ water supply but also support a more sustainable future.

“By replacing lead pipes at no cost to residents, we’re making a long-term investment in both public health and the environment. This is a vital step toward delivering cleaner, greener water to every home in the community.”

Properties built before 1970 may still have lead supply pipes. Severn Trent will replace these with modern plastic pipes free of charge—an upgrade that would typically cost homeowners around £3,000.

The water company said the new durable pipes will enhance water flow and reduce the risk of leaks, contributing to a more reliable and efficient water supply. Once all lead pipes are removed, it will reduce the need for additional treatments and support a more sustainable water system.
