Uisce Éireann is progressing a €50 million upgrade of the wastewater infrastructure network in Rathmullan, Ramelton and Milford – later this month significant improvement works will get underway in the seaside village of Rathmullan.
Uisce Éireann has prioritised more than 600 metres of damaged water mains for replacement which will ensure a reduction in disruption from bursts and supply interruptions for customers. The new pipework will also put an end to leakage of treated water into the ground.
Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager Patricia Lowry said:
“This work will bring a range of benefits for our customers in the area including reliability of supply and improved water quality. It will also help us achieve our 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The National Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%.
“We understand that this type of work is inconvenient, and our crews are making every effort to minimise disruption to the local community. These works are vital to ensure Rathmullan’s security of supply now and into the future, with the long-term benefits far outweighing any short-term inconvenience.”
Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned interruptions.
The works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.
Farrans Construction are carrying out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann which are expected to be completed by Summer 2025.
When completed, the €50 million upgrade project will reduce the risk of sewer flooding and address non-compliant sewer overflows into the Maggy’s Burn, Leannan Estuary and Lough Swilly.
It will also improve the capacity of the sewer network allowing for current and future population growth, and supporting the social and economic development of Rathmullan, Ramelton and Milford and the surrounding area.
