Welsh Water finally lifts ‘boil water’ notice imposed on 24th November

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water has finally lifted the precautionary ‘boil water’ notice that has been in place for customers in parts of Rhondda Cynon Taf since 24th November.

The immediate lifting of the notice means that customers can drink their tap water as usual.

Sampling and testing of drinking water quality was maintained throughout the period, and Welsh Water has confirmed that the tests show there is no longer a need to boil drinking water.

The notice was in place for customers in Blaenrhondda, Blaencwm, Tynewydd, Treherbert, Treorchy, Cwm-parc, Ton Pentre, Gelli and parts of Pentre, Tonypandy and Ystrad.

Heavy rain during Storm Bert on the 24th of November caused flooding damage at Tynywaun Water Treatment Works in Treherbert, with surface water running from the hill onto the drinking water storage tank which impacted the tank.

Welsh Water have been working 24 hours a day to repair the damage, with extensive clearing on site and work done to protect the drinking water storage tanks from such extreme events in future.

Much of the work has been dependent on dry weather to successfully install a waterproof membrane around the tanks.

Each household impacted by the notice will receive a total goodwill payment of £250 and each business will receive £500.

Three water bottle stations were set up by Welsh Water in the area, vulnerable customers received home deliveries of bottled water, and water was also delivered to hospitals, schools and care homes.

With all customers now able to drink their water as normal, the bottled water stations will be removed on Friday night and home deliveries will now stop.

“We also appreciate the support and gratitude shown by customers to our colleagues who have been working in these communities.

“Nothing matters more to us than public health and providing the best possible drinking water to our customers.”
