€50 million wastewater project in Donegal nears completion as Uisce Éireann progresses strategic investment

Significant progress has been made on Uisce Éireann’s €50 million wastewater project in Donegal to upgrade the wastewater infrastructure for Ramelton, Milford and Rathmullan. with the finish line now in sight.

In early 2025 Uisce Éireann will have put an end to the discharge of raw sewage into the Leannan Estuary, Lough Swilly and Maggie’s Burn.

The works will safeguard the environment and will also support social and economic development - works to finalise the project will continue over the coming months

At this stage, the construction team has completed much of the new sewer pipelines, underground wastewater storage tanks and associated pump houses.

Significant progress has also been made on the construction of the Tirroddy Wastewater Treatment Plant with the mechanical and electrical fit out ongoing.

Uisce Éireann’s Portfolio Manager Paul Fallon is looking forward to delivering the beneficial project for the coastal communities – he commented:

“With an investment of approximately €100 million in wastewater projects around Donegal, we are dedicated to providing state of the art wastewater services and infrastructure for both present and future generations. Our focus for Ramelton, Milford and Rathmullan is eliminating untreated wastewater discharge into the local waterways to protect the local environmental and of course provide infrastructure that will stand the test of time."

Uisce Éireann’s strategic investment programme in Donegal's existing wastewater infrastructure is yielding benefits for communities throughout the county.

In Kerrykeel, Kilcar, and Burtonport, works have been successfully completed as part of a €20 million investment in new wastewater treatment plants and related infrastructure, putting an end to the discharge of raw sewage into the environment.

Meanwhile, the recently completed Coolatee Sewerage Scheme project has successfully eliminated raw sewage discharge into the Deele River, enhancing wastewater treatment capacity and accommodating both current and future population growth.

Progress is also underway on the €31 million Buncrana, Ballyboffey, and Stranorlar Sewer Networks Project, with a completion date scheduled for 2025.

In addition, Uisce Éireann is progressing with works to deliver major wastewater upgrades in Carrigart, Kilmacrennan, and Mountcharles. This project will bring improvements in water quality and enable growth in all three villages.
