Northumbrian Water is starting work on a £4 million project that will enhance the resilience and quality of water supplies to parts of Northumberland and Tyneside.
The water company is investing in the work at Whittle Dene Water Treatment Works (WTW), north east of Hexham, which supports the supply of water to 400,000 of its customers across South Northumberland and Newcastle.
Work on the installation of two new tanks on the site’s backwash facility, which is used as part of the treatment process, is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024.
The project will enhance the resilience of the site and its ability to produce high quality drinking water.
The work is part of a wider £5.25 million investment at the site, with a further £1.25 million upgrade to other elements of the treatment processes having started in November 2022, due to be finished by October 2023.

“Being able to deliver the best quality drinking water possible for our customers is vital, and this investment at Whittle Dene will ensure we continue to be able to do this for the 400,000 customers whose supplies are supported by Whittle Dene Water Treatment Works.

Speaking in the House of Commons on 21 July 2025, then environment secretary Steve Reed said, “This Government will cut water companies’ sewage pollution in half by the end of the decade.”
