Cambridge Water consults on draft Water Resources Management Plan

Cambridge Water, part of South Staffordshire Water Plc. has launched the latest version of its Water Resources Management Plan and is asking for customers to send their views.

The latest document sets out Cambridge Water’s draft long-term water resources management plan (WRMP) for 25 years between 2020 and 2045.

The plan takes into consideration the impact of climate change, population growth and the need to protect the environment. More specifically, it covers:

  • A transformational 15% reduction in leakage by 2024/25.
  • Cambridge Water will also consider the benefits of a live network, where data can help identify leaks more quickly.
  • Continuing to increase the number of customers who choose to have a water meter over the next 15 years. The Cambridge region already has a high proportion (70%) of metered customers.
  • Reducing the volume of water each person in the region uses every day by 1 litre per person per day by 2024/25.
  • Investing in new treatment processes at three groundwater sources to further enhance resilience of supply.

Pete Aspley, Wholesale Director, said:

“Water resources management is a balance between supply and demand – we have to make sure there is enough water to meet the long-term demand from homes and businesses, while protecting the natural environment we draw the supply from.

In compiling the plan, we have taken into account all the factors that will influence the balance of supply and demand for water. We assess these factors and allow for uncertainty to ensure that we maintain a surplus of supply over expected demand for water. We have also listened to our customers and consulted with various stakeholders, to ensure their views are taken into account.”

Deadline to comment on the draft WRMP is 27 May 2018. Click here to download the draft WRMP
