New Wessex Water sewer safeguards Wootton Bassett homes

Wessex Water has completed a £250k project to relieve flooding in an area near Wootton Bassett. The company has laid a new sewer in Broad Town to reduce the risk of flooding at properties in the area.

Matthew Bridge, Wessex Water’s project manager for the scheme, said: “

This essential work will increase the capacity of the local sewerage network so it can cope with higher volumes of waste.

It will alleviate flooding in the area caused occasionally during extreme weather conditions.”

The improvement work , which began in December and lasted 13 weeks, involved laying 550m of sewer up to 3.5m below Broad Town Road as well as the construction of manholes. Two new pumps were also installed at a nearby pumping station. The construction of the new sewer has resulted in homes being removed from the flood register.

Mr Bridge added: “

To complete this work safely we had no choice but to close Broad Town Road, which unfortunately affected people’s journeys through the area.

“We would like to thank all residents and motorists for their cooperation while we completed this project, which has safeguarded properties that have been affected by flooding.”

Wessex Water is investing around £500m over the next five years to improve its sewerage infrastructure. It will involve reducing the risk of flooding for more than 500 customers and making improvements to meet new environmental standards.
