United Utilities sets out plans for £6.5m sewer upgrade

United Utilities set out its plans to residents in Carnforth yesterday for its proposed £6.5 million sewer upgrade which will take place over the next two years to deliver improvements in bathing water quality at Morecambe Bay.

The £6.5 million scheme will involve some major underground engineering, aimed at capturing more of the dirty water that fills up the sewers in periods of heavy rainfall to help prevent it spilling into the River Keer which flows into Morecambe Bay.

The scheme includes a large new underground storage tank and it will be linked up to the existing sewer system via a new tunnel which engineers will drill underneath a disused railway line.

United Utilities project manager Ian Grzelak explained:

“The North West’s bathing waters are cleaner now than they have ever been in living memory. But there’s still more to do because the European standards on water quality have just become tighter.”

“Sewer systems are one of the factors that can affect bathing water quality. So we’re targeting more locations where the sewers can overflow during heavy rain, carrying bacteria into the sea. The work we’re planning at Carnforth will address this problem and we hope to get started this autumn.”

Anticipated completion date for the project is Spring 2017.
