Pump failure leads to £4k fine for Northern Ireland Water

Northern Ireland Water was fined £4,000 by magistrates on Monday for breaching the conditions of a discharge consent relating to the operation of  its Flynn’s Waste Water Pumping Station.

NI Water pleaded guilty at Downpatrick Magistrates' Court to breaching the conditions of the consent for the WWPS at Dundrum.

, On 4 November 2013, a Senior Water Quality Inspector acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, inspected the Combined Storm Overflow (CSO) discharge points in the Dundrum area. Untreated sewage was observed to be discharging from the Main Street CSO, Dundrum into Dundrum Inner Bay.

The discharge occurred due to one pump running but not pumping as the result of an airlock and the other pump being unavailable as it was awaiting repair from 29 October 2013. This situation contravened the conditions of a Water (NI) Order 1999 ‘consent to discharge’ issued in respect of the installation.
