Water competition comes to Scotland

Scottish Water's right to monopolise the market ended yesterday with more than 100,000 businesses and public bodies, such as local authorities, hospitals, schools etc. now free to choose from whom they buy their water and sewerage services, in a radical move that is being hailed as a world first for the water sector.

Ofwat has today published its proposals to fine Severn Trent Water 3% of its turnover - a total of £35.8 million - for deliberately providing false information to the regulator and providing a poor service to its customers.

A formal investigation was announced today into how Northern Ireland Water (NIW) managed the release of information in late February about its costs and tariffs.

Ofwat has published its response to the independent review ‘Learning lessons from the 2007 floods’ conducted by Sir Michael Pitt.

The Environment Agency has prosecuted Southern Water for not complying with its sewage discharge consent at a waste water treatment works that it operates in Gillingham, Kent.

Ofwat fines Thames Water £9.7 million

Ofwat has fined Thames Water 0.7% of turnover (£9.7 million) for misreporting information and delivering poor service to customers.

Water UK , the body which represents UK water and wastewater service suppliers at national and European level, has announced the publication of an independent assessment of the prospects for water competition in the United Kingdom.

The United Kingdom Technical Advisory Group (UKTAG) which provides coordinated advice on technical aspects of the implementation of the Water Framework Directive in the United Kingdom has added two new documents to its website.

Defra and the UK dairy industry have launched a Milk Roadmap that aims to reduce the environmental impacts of producing and consuming liquid milk.

The Water Services Regulation Authority (Ofwat) has published its response to the Defra consultation on phosphates in domestic laundry cleaning products in England.

Applications from Northumbrian Water to vary the treatment of sewage discharges from six sewage works in the north east will not be 'called in' for a decision by the Secretary of State for the Environment.
