MPs focused on future flood and water management legislation last week as they debated the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee’s recent report - and the government’s response to it.

Last week the Environment Agency released a list of the ten most improved rivers in England and Wales. Conservationists have criticised the report saying it presents a rosy view of river health and ignores the many waterways struggling with pollution, over abstraction and other threats.

The Government must act now to attract vital new investment into the UK’s ageing infrastructure, according to a new report from the CBI and KPMG.

Hydro International’s interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2011 demonstrate that the wastewater treatment company has enjoyed strong revenue growth during the period, while its order book has nearly doubled.

 

The imminent second edition of the National Infrastructure Plan (NIP 2), must map out how to stimulate £200 billion of private investment in UK transport and energy networks if infrastructure is to deliver as a key strand in the strategy for growth, according to the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). 

A plan to create better habitats and join up the homes of some of England’s most iconic wildlife has been published today by Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman.

Dairy sets 25% water use reduction target by 2015

Robert Wiseman Dairies, one of the UK's largest milk suppliers, has set itself a target of reducing water use across its network of dairies by 25% by 2015. 

A new research paper published by the World Bank suggests that consumers in China would be willing to pay up to 3% of their annual income continuously over a five year period to improve water quality. It could also provide some useful pointers on issues the water companies will need to address in the stakeholder engagement Ofwat now wants them to undertake in the upcoming AMP6 business planning process.

Anglian starts £1.5M reservoir project

Anglian Water is due to start work later this month on a £1.5 million scheme to renovate an underground reservoir in Ipswich.

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has referred the proposed UK joint venture between Anglo American and Lafarge  to the Competition Commission.
