Water industry calls for Government to act on bad debt and affordability

MPs focused on future flood and water management legislation last week as they debated the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee’s recent report - and the government’s response to it.

Water Minister Richard Benyon MP promised that the Water White Paper would be published by December this year.

Affordability and bad debt – and their impact on customers - are key concerns for the water industry and Water UK has continued to point out that two key elements of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 have not yet been implemented.

The water industry is pressing for measures on social tariffs and bad debt to be implemented and is urging the government to bring forward guidance on section 44 of the Flood and Water Management Act (social tariffs) and regulations of section 45 of the Flood and Water Management Act (bad debt) as soon as possible.
