Sizewell C Ltd. applies for environmental permit to discharge water from Temporary Construction Area into Leiston Drain main river

The Environment Agency has received a new bespoke application for an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 from Sizewell C Ltd.

Sizewell C nuclear power station 1

Construction of Sizewell C is already underway with 1,500 people on site, 400 UK suppliers, and £2.8 billion in contracts awarded. Over 70% of the £14 billion construction value of the project will be spent in the UK.

Sizewell C is the first nuclear power project to be financed using the UK’s Regulated Asset Base (RAB) model - the RAB model was used for the construction of the Thames Tideway Tunnel.

The power station is being built alongside Sizewell A and B on the Suffolk coast and will replicate the design and operation of Hinkley Point C in Somerset.

The application is for a standalone flood risk activity permit (FRAP) in the Sizewell C Temporary Construction Area at Leiston in Suffolk and covers the construction of a surface water outfall and bagwork headwall within the northern bank of the Leiston Drain main river.

The outfall (Outfall 02) will discharge attenuated and treated surface water into the Leiston Drain from the Temporary Construction Area (TCA) Water Management Zone 2 catchment area.

Scope of works covers the receiving environment (whether temporary or permanent) in, over, under or within 8m of the Leiston Drain (main river).

Deadline to view and comment on the application is 20 May 2026.
