NATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE STRATEGYWater infrastructure and flood risk management both feature in the government’s National Infrastructure Strategy published by HM Treasury last week.

Lord Adonis, former chairman of the National Infrastructure Commission, has warned that the Government is “ducking” key issues on critical water infrastructure, accusing them of kicking the can down the road.

The Department of Food Environment and RuralAffairs has launched a new consultation seeking views on the types and sizes of nationally significant water resources infrastructure, including reservoirs, water transfer schemes and desalination plants, in order to amend the Planning Act 2008.

Infrastructure Bill becomes law

The Infrastructure Bill which has been the subject of heated debate in Parliament  in recent weeks over regulations related to fracking gained Royal Assent and passed into law today.

The Government is planning to streamline the complaints process for specialised infrastructure projects (SIPs), such as the Thames Tideway Tunnel, following a consultation.

Water industry regulator Ofwat has published a document setting out the guidance it will take into account in determining whether to select an infrastructure project as a ‘specified infrastructure project’.

Thames Water has started the process to identify potential UK and international investors to fund construction of the proposed £4.2 billion Tideway Tunnel .
