Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, has been awarded of UK two coastal defence contracts totalling £73 million for Blackpool Council and Wyre Council.

The £20 million Anchorsholme Scheme for Blackpool Council and the £53 million Rossall Scheme for Wyre Council will replace over 2.9km of the original 1930’s seawalls as part of the promenade renewal and beach management projects.

Bal;four Beatty is planning to utilise Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology on both schemes at design development stage and throughout construction to create a virtual environment to mitigate risks and manage interfaces prior to starting works on site.

The firm will also train teams from both Councils to use BIM for asset management purposes including ongoing operations, maintenance planning and monitoring once the schemes have been handed over.

Balfour Beatty has delivered sea defence schemes for Blackpool Council and Wyre Council during relationships spanning over 13 years.The firm's previous work with Blackpool Council and Wyre Council included the £75 million Blackpool Central Area Coast Protection Scheme and the £19 million Cleveleys Coastal Defence & Improvements Phases 2, 3 & 4. 

Over the last 13 years we have delivered 21 significant coastal defence projects amounting to over £230 million for local authorities and the Environment Agency.  Our current portfolio of coastal works includes the £12 million Morpeth Flood Alleviation Scheme, the £5 million River Mersey Flood Defence Scheme, £2.7 million Humber Coastal Defence scheme, £6 million Lincshore Beach Replenishment 5 year Scheme; all for the Environment Agency and, the £1.2 million Hightown Coastal Defences Phase 2 scheme for Sefton Borough Council.

Works on both contracts will commence on site this winter with completion for Anchorsholme in summer 2015 and completion for Rossall in the summer of 2017.

Both schemes will be predominantly funded by the Environment Agency.  They form part of the wider Fylde Peninsula Coastal Programme which aims to protect properties from flooding and regenerate parkland areas for local community use.
