A new report for the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) shows that renewable sources could provide at least 35% of the UK's energy capacity by 2020.

Go ahead for wave energy converter

A wave energy converter promising reliable power generation from the ocean waves has now reached the phase where a 42 meter long pre-commercial demonstration unit to be tested at sea can be designed and built.

The first round of United Nations (UN) climate change negotiations since the Cancun summit in December, being held in Bangkok from April 3-8, will start on the work plan agreed at Cancun for 2011.

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) said the Government must consider the practical delivery of a new generation of low carbon energy infrastructure alongside measures to enable future investment in its response to the Electricity Market Reform consultation.

The Government has published proposals to reduce the financial support available to larger scale solar-produced electricity as part of plans to protect financial support for homes, communities and small businesses.

First tidal power array in Scotland

The Scottish Government has approved ScottishPower Renewables’ plans to develop a 10MW tidal power array in The Sound of Islay on Scotland’s west coast. The project, the first of its kind in the world, envisages generating enough renewable electricity to power the equivalent of the whole island.

The Government has this morning announced the start of the first review of the Feed in Tariffs (FITs) scheme for small scale low carbon electricity generation. As part of the review, the Government will undertake a short study into the take-up of FITs for farm based Anaerobic Digestion plants.

The Crown Estate has announced that four companies have pre-qualified to submit tenders for new wave and tidal stream energy projects, each up to 30 MW capacity. The Estate has also invited bids for three commercial demonstration projects, each up to 10 MW.

The Government has published an anaerobic digestion framework document setting out the steps it believes are needed to increase energy from waste in England through anaerobic digestion (AD). 

A comprehensive review of industry’s environmental performance in England and Wales has been published by the Environment Agency.
