The Mining Remediation Authority has awarded a major contract for operations and maintenance of mine water treatment schemes and legacy assets – the contract has an estimated total value of £203.1 million (ex VAT).

The MRA manages the effects of past coal mining, including subsidence damage claims which are not the responsibility of licensed coal mine operators. It deals with mine water pollution from both coal and metal mines and other mining legacy issues. The organisation, which manages over 80 mine water treatment schemes, currently has the capacity to treat 220 billion litres of mine water every year.
The award of the contract, which was tendered in April 2024, was concluded in December 2025. Alpheus Environmental Ltd has been awarded the work, one of three companies who tendered for the contract.
Current start and end dates for the contract are 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2034.
