Portsmouth Water awards Cappagh £136m AMP8 Infrastructure and Smart Water Meter Installation contracts

Portsmouth Water and Cappagh have announced the award of two AMP8 agreements by Portsmouth Water following a competitive tender process.

Cappagh will deliver the requirements for the critical smart water meter installation and commissioning programme and infrastructure contract for the period 2025 to 2030, and potentially to 2035.

Combined, both contracts, which will commence on 1st August, are expected to be worth £136.5 million and will result in new asset installations and asset upgrades delivered across AMP8/9.

The successful contract delivery relies heavily on close collaboration by the partners, with a key component being co-location of staff at Portsmouth Water’s head office in Havant.

Portsmouth Water’s significant investment in its smart water meter rollout is essential to ensure sustainable water supplies for generations to come, while protecting the environment. Under this contract 170,000 new smart water meters will be installed by 2030, with all customers being served by a smart water meter by 2033. This will allow speedier leak detection and repair; and enable customers to track and manage their water usage.

The infrastructure programme will see Cappagh renew water mains and associated service pipes, lay new mains and service connections to new development sites in Portsmouth Water’s area of supply, install smart water meters requested by customers, effect network repairs and maintenance and the permanent reinstatement of surfaces.

Matt Guest, CEO at Cappagh said “We are delighted with these important contract awards by Portsmouth Water, which underlines the trust in the capabilities of Cappagh and our people to deliver successfully for Portsmouth Water’s customers. We are looking forward to building on the already excellent collaborative relationship and playing our part in delivering the AMP8 business plan.”

Portsmouth Water CEO, Bob Taylor, commented, “Our business plan for the five- year AMP8 period is ambitious. We’re delivering our largest ever investment programme to ensure our customers continue to receive a high-quality, reliable and affordable supply of water, despite the challenges of climate change and population growth. These two contracts awarded to Cappagh are a critical part of these plans and we look forward to working closely with them to deliver these vital investments over the coming years.”
