Southern Water is inviting suppliers to submit Expressions of Interest for a major contract for strategic waste management worth an estimated £640 million ahead of going out to tender with a formal contract notice in April.

The water company is seeking suppliers for a wide range of strategic waste management services including:
- provision of planned and reactive intersite liquid sludge tankering
- planned and reactive intersite raw sludge cake transfer
- onsite tankering services such as wet well cleaning, tank cleaning, tank emptying, jetting, lagoon cleaning, hazardous waste disposal, chemical disposal, and emergency incident response including street works
The utility also has a requirement for waste brokers or specialist waste disposers to manage the disposal of "novel wastes" arising from the water and wastewater treatment operation e.g. sewage waste mixed with petrochemicals, spent chemical containers, asbestos waste, out of specification sludge waste.
Other services required under the contract include:
- general waste collection and disposal
- planned and reactive grit and screenings collection and disposal
- fly tipping & hazardous waste collection and disposal
- reactive response to and management of pollution events etc.
In addition, the contract will also cover the marketing, sale, transport and disposal of digested sewage sludge cake (biosolids).Activities include planned haulage of up to 300,000 tonnes/yr of Biosolids and up to 10,000 tones/yr of water clarification sludges to suitable agricultural outlets.
Some elements of the services will be required 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Lots outlined in the Periodic Indicative Notice are currently set out as follows:
Lot 1 - Planned and Reactive Tankering & Waste Services
Lot 2 - Digested Cake Biosolids Offsite
Lot 3 - Novel Waste Disposal/Brokerage
Lot 4 - Waste Ancillary Services
However, the exact Lots are still to be confirmed - Southern Water said some of the above activities may be separated into a different Lot at the time of the final tender pack release.
