Thames Water tenders £80m AMP7 contract for new Guildford sewage treatment works

Thames Water has gone out to tender with a contract to design, construct and commission a new Sewage Treatment Works (STW) in Guildford worth an estimated £80 million in total.

The new works is intended to replace the existing STW - the relocation is part of a complex major project which will benefit both the water company and Guildford Borough Council. The works occupies a site that the Council wants to redevelop to provide additional local housing to achieve part of its planning objectives. The contract also covers de-commissioning the existing plant.

GUILDFORD SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKS

The project provides an opportunity for Thames Water to support the Council by playing a key part in the proposed Weyside Urban Village housing development, positively impacting on the local plan to meet growth and housing demands, and improving the local environment. The new STW will be re-located to a site to the north of the neighbouring Slyfield Industrial Estate.

The scope of work includes:

  • full design including development to support TW obtain planning permission
  • activated Sludge Process (ASP) – complete new build
  • gravity fed tunnel to defined corridor connecting to inlet pumping station
  • connection to existing sewer network
  • commissioning of new STW
  • de-commissioning of existing STW

Thames expects to award the contract by May 2021 with the project is required to be complete by December 2025. The successful contractor will be required to carry out the works without adversely impacting on the integrity of the existing STW and to design the Works to achieve the Environmental permit.
