Gurney Environmental have received a second order from Jersey Water for a ResMix 1000 ‘Source Management’ system.
Already adopted by Jersey Water at their Val de la Mare reservoir — and by various water utilities in multiple locations across Scotland, England and Wales — the new order for the ResMix system will be used at Jersey Water's Grands Vaux reservoir and comes following an evaluation process by the company and their consultants.
Scottish Water were the first water utility company in the UK to adopt the Australian made WEARS ResMix ‘Source Management’ system 8 years ago. Since that time, a growing number of water utilities have added the systems to their raw water supply reservoirs.
The ResMix ‘Source Management’ system improves and maintains water quality in the reservoir with the benefit of downstream savings at the water treatment works.
Constructed in 1952, Jersey Water’s Grands Vaux Reservoir dam is 141m long and 15m high and the reservoir holds just over 50 million gallons.
System uses about 1/20 of power used by conventional solutions
The Australian-made WEARS ResMix System offers a unique approach to raw water supply management. The water in reservoirs and deep lakes naturally forms thermal layers. The result can be increased metals and nutrients concentrations, blooms of blue green algae and aged water. As a result, the water has to be subjected to expensive chemical treatment before it is safe to drink.
While the focus has been on treatment within the WTP, the raw water has become progressively more difficult and costly to treat due to increasingly stringent regulation and consumer expectations.
The ResMix system is a floating axial flow impeller system that skims large volumes of water from the surface and pushes it down to break up the layers distributing oxygen rich water from the surface to the bottom of the impoundment.
The system is very cost effective, simple to install and uses about one twentieth of the power of conventional solutions. Water quality starts to improve in days, and, to date, there have been no more blue green algal blooms in reservoirs using the system.
Developed over 12 years of R&D, the system has the potential to save water treatment companies large amounts of their operating budget for treatment and has been installed across multiple facilities in several markets.
The use of the ResMIx system results in significant OPEX savings at the WTP through less chemical dosing and filter backwashing.
