Conwy County Borough Council has gone out to tender with a £multi-million coastal defence works contract.

The contract is for the construction of Phase 2 of the Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project in North Wales. The Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project represents a substantial investment in the infrastructure along Colwyn Bay's seafront and originated through amalgamation of two separate schemes along the coastal frontage into a single, coordinated entity.

The project in its entirety consists of coastal defence works, which are required to protect the properties, businesses and vital infrastructure present along the frontage, along with regeneration works to the promenade.

The VVP Phase 2 works will realise improvements along a 1 km section of promenade, from the Pier to Cayley Bank, Rhos on Sea, to the same standard of finish as achieved for Phase 1 of the scheme (Porth Eirias to the Pier including improved linkage to the town).

Principal elements of the works currently being procured by the Authority include:

• Construction of concrete clad new steel sheet pile wall seaward of the existing seawall to widen the existing promenade for approximately 360 m length of promenade.
• Formation of ‘headland’ structures as part of the promenade widening works to form ‘feature’ areas.
• Raising the levels of the existing promenade and highway.
• Construction of a new secondary sea defence wall.

A maximum of six suppliers will be invited to tender for the contract - time limit for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is 5th October.
