Leading European engineering consultancy, Grontmij has been appointed to three frameworks for the provision of services to Glasgow City Council on the Commonwealth Games Athlete’s Village site. This includes a building framework covering civil and structural services, water consultancy services in relation to strategic drainage and a geotechnical and testing framework.
The consultancy has now begun work on phase two of the Athlete’s Village site investigation and assessment. Grontmij won the commission in the face of strong competition from six other consultants through a mini-competition under the geotechnical framework. Phase one of the ground investigation and risk assessment works was successfully completed by the consultancy in December 2008.
This latest commission will draw on a wide range of expertise from Grontmij’s Built and Natural Environment division, with input from 40 professionals located in the consultancy’s Edinburgh and Glasgow offices.
The phase two works comprise the detailed site investigation and risk assessment of the whole site. On completion, Grontmij will start towards the development of the remediation strategy for the site, taking into account contaminated land, waste, ecology and geotechnics, including mine workings. This will support Glasgow City Council towards preparing the site for up to 8,000 athletes and their teams to live and train during the Games.
Iain Hall, principal consultant at Grontmij, said: “To have won this commission is a real achievement and we look forward to working closely with Glasgow City Council to provide a site suitable for use as the Athlete’s Village and subsequent development for the Games legacy.
“Our site investigation specialists are already working to deliver a thorough assessment of the site condition. We look forward to further working with the council towards developing their remediation programme, particularly in line with the council’s targets to produce a ‘low carbon’ Commonwealth Games.”
Councillor Archie Graham, executive member for Commonwealth Games delivery at Glasgow City Council, said: “The 2014 Commonwealth Games will be a fantastic event for Glasgow and Scotland. At these vital early stages of the Athletes’ Village project we’re pleased to be working with Grontmij, which can provide a range of specialist skills and knowledge to prepare the site.”
