The risk of sewer flooding in Hackenthorpe in Sheffield will be significantly reduced as the result of a £2 million investment by Yorkshire Water which will also reduce the risk of pollution in the nearby Shire Brook.

In 2012 and 2013 the water company invested £500,000 in the sewer network in Hackenthorpe to reduce sewer flooding and this latest project will further protect local homes.

Specialist contractors, BarhaleWSP, will start work in September. The scheme includes  a new sewage pumping station, together with nearly 800 metres of new sewer pipe which will collect the sewer flows from the street and pass them safely to the pumping station.

Ross Housley Yorkshire Water Project Manager, said:

"This project demonstrates just how committed we are to playing our part to help reduce the risk of flooding in previously flood-prone areas. It will significantly increase the capacity of our sewerage network, ensuring it's better placed to meet the growing demands it comes under.”

The work will be completed by summer 2015.
