United Utilities will put its plans to construct an underground £15M water storage tank at Disley on display this week.
United Utilities has drawn up the scheme for the new service reservoir to ensure reliable water supplies for people in the south Stockport and High Peak areas.
Kevin Davies, United Utilities project manager, said:
"This will be a major investment for the High Peak area and it's vital to help safeguard water supplies for around 40,000 people.
"The existing tank at Jackson's Edge, known as a service reservoir, is 100 years old. It has served us well, but it is now coming to the end of its life.
The utility first unveiled the scheme in March. Following feedback from local residents, United Utilities undertook further investigations and made some changes. and now the updated proposals.
The proposed new structure will act like a giant header tank for the Disley area and will store up to 18 million litres of treated water. Engineers are planning to build the new structure in two phases to keep water supplies on tap throughout the process.
The company aims to submit its planning application in September. If the updated proposals are given approval, work is expected to start in early 2014 and take around three years to complete.
The new plans will be on display at a public exhibition at Disley Community Centre on Thursday 16 August between 6 - 9pm. United Utilities staff will also be on-hand to discuss details of the proposals.
