Once delivered, the upgraded plant will increase capacity to cater for 4,800 additional homes, ensuring the network can meet current and future demand while improving overall resilience of the water supply.

The proposed project will involve the installation and commissioning of a new water treatment stream at the plant.

This will include a modern chemical dosing system, new filtration and flocculation processes, and a full electrical upgrade. The plans also provide for the construction of new buildings and tanks, along with enhancements to the site’s power supply.

Commenting on the planning submission, Barry Garvin, Regional Water Treatment Planning Manager with Uisce Éireann in the North West, said:

“This €13 million investment in Castlerea Water Treatment Plant is a vital step in securing a safe and reliable water supply for the community. We recognise the significant disruption that Boil Water Notices have caused for customers in the past, and this upgrade is designed to address those challenges by significantly improving treatment processes at the plant. It will also increase capacity to support future housing and economic development, while helping to reduce the risk of Boil Water Notices.”

Subject to planning approval, construction is expected to commence in 2027, with substantial completion anticipated by 2029 and commissioning in 2030.
