Uisce Éireann has commenced construction on a €23 million upgrade of Ballymahon Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The major investment will provide additional wastewater treatment capacity, paving the way for future growth and investment in Ballymahon while helping to safeguard water quality in the River Inny.

The upgrade will modernise Ballymahon Wastewater Treatment Plant through the delivery of new infrastructure and advanced treatment technology. It will strengthen the resilience of local wastewater services, support compliance with Irish and EU environmental standards and incorporate sustainable features, including a solar array to support more energy-efficient operations.

Esther White, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, commented:

"This project represents a powerful investment in Ballymahon's future. As the town continues to grow, it is essential that wastewater infrastructure keeps pace with that growth. This upgrade will almost double the capacity of the existing treatment plant, providing the infrastructure needed to support future development while helping to safeguard water quality in the River Inny. It will also deliver long-term environmental benefits, strengthen the resilience of local wastewater services and incorporate sustainable features, including a solar array to support more energy-efficient operations."

The project will almost double the capacity of the existing treatment plant, increasing it from a population equivalent (PE) of 2,125 to 4,150. The additional capacity will help ensure wastewater infrastructure can support future growth and development in Ballymahon for decades to come while helping to safeguard water quality in the River Inny.

Construction is underway and expected to be completed end of 2029.
