Uisce Éireann has started work on a multi-million-euro upgrade of the local wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for Newmarket-on-Fergus.

This project will bring many benefits to local businesses, homes and neighbouring communities, as well as improving the health and integrity of the environment and associated conservation habitats. This project will also protect recreational waters for fishing and boating activities and ensure compliance with Irish and EU legislation.
Uisce Eireann Programme Manager, Angus Hall said:
“We know how much communities like Newmarket-on-Fergus need these essential upgrades, to allow them to thrive. It is more important than ever for Uisce Eireann to help provide growth in these areas; while also improving the environment.”
The project will involve:
upgrades to the existing WWTP
construction of a new outfall location to the River Rine
construction of a new rising main
new below-ground pumping station
new combined sewer overflow storage tank.
Glanua is carrying out these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, and works are due to complete in 2028.
