Welsh Water invests £9 million in Lluest Wen Reservoir upgrade

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water are investing £9 million to upgrade the assets at Lluest Wen Reservoir - the investment will help ensure around 15,000 customers across the Rhondda Fach and in surrounding areas continue to receive a top-quality drinking water supply.

The work being carried out by the not-for-profit company involves refurbishing the spillway, which is the overflow for the reservoir. This feature allows excess water from the river which is not used for drinking water supplies to pass safely around the dam. Keeping the asset in good condition is essential to help protect the dam against flood damage and ensuring a reliable source of water for the whole community.

The water company is progressing the work, which began in October 2020 - the concrete bases that form the spillway are on track to be completed this month and work is underway to construct the walls and drainage system. Welsh Water is working with Mott MacDonald Bentley on the project - the work is currently on track to complete during Spring 2022.

Rhys Hellin, Welsh Water Sub Programme Manager, said:

“Our £9 million investment is essential to ensure we continue to provide customers in the area with a first-class drinking water supply. As a not-for-profit company we continue to invest in our assets to strengthen our resilience and continue to improve the service to our customers."

The work forms part of the £1.8 billion investment being made by the not-for-profit company between 2020 and 2025 to improve services to customers and protect the environment.
