Welsh Water has invested £4.5 million in a scheme to deliver environmental improvements to the town of Whitchurch.

The work involved upgrading the process within the existing waste water treatment works which included improved control systems, new sand filters, the installation of new equipment and associated pipework.

The scheme forms part of the implementation of the European Habitats Directive on the River Dee, which has been designated as a candidate for Special Area of Conservation under the ruling.

The completed scheme will enhance the performance of the network and improve the quality of storm water that may enter the local watercourse during storm weather conditions. It will also benefit the quality of the water by helping to lower the phosphorus levels in the river and providing a boost to aquatic life and the environment in general.

Welsh Water liaised closely with representatives from the Environment Agency, Shropshire Council and Whitchurch Town Council during the project’s planning stages.
